The consequences of the extensive monoculture of avocados in Chile.
Petorca province became the epicenter of the water emergency in a country where the water code, approved in 1981 by the military regime of Pinochet, has made water a market subject to private ownership. It was easy for large companies to obtain perpetual rights to exploit the area from the state.
This work is part of a long term project called ” In the name of wellness” that has been granted from the Pulitzer Center on crisis reporting. ” In the name of wellness ” investigates the phenomenon of environmental neocolonialism, its mechanism and its consequences on the ecosystems and local population to support the market for a diet that is defined as healthy in Western countries.
Karl Mancini
Karl Mancini is an award-winning Italian documentary photographer based out of Rome and Buenos Aires. Since 2001, he has worked in more than 90 countries focusing on social issues such as gender, environment, war aftermaths, human rights and migration. In 2022, he was grantee from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting for his long term work “In the name of wellness”. His works have been exhibited in USA, England, Russia, Australia, India, Japan, Italy, Canada, Spain and in many international festivals, earning him awards in prestigious competitions.
