IMAZIGHEN
Berbers, a culture in resistance 2004-2022.

Singular and plural, the very ancient Berber culture is also one of the most unknown and threatened in North Africa. The Imazighen* occupy a vast territory stretching from the Canary Islands to the Siwa oasis in Egypt, including Morocco and Algeria. These two countries are home to the majority of the Amazigh population which forms an indigenous entity: they are Tuaregs, Riffians, Kabyles, Chleuhs, Chaouis, Mzabs.

*Imazighen (Amazigh in the singular) – which means free man – is the original name of the Western term Berber.

Ferhat Bouda

Born in 1976 in Kabylia, Ferhat Bouda, Algerian photographer, member of Agence VU’ since 2014, is today based in Frankfurt (Germany). He is part of a tradition of documentary photography, and bears witness with respect to complex situations that are often difficult to understand, thwarting clichés and stereotypes. Winner of the Pierre and Alexandra Boulat scholarship in 2016, the Berlin Academy of Arts photography prize and scholarship in 2020, his work is regularly published in the international press, exhibited in Algeria, Germany, France, and presented at festivals.

Singulière et plurielle, la culture berbère très ancienne est aussi l’une des plus méconnues et menacées d’Afrique du Nord. Les Imazighen* occupent un vaste territoire allant des îles Canaries jusqu’à l’oasis de Siwa en Égypte, incluant le Maroc et l’Algérie. Ces deux pays abritent la plus grande partie de la population amazighe qui forme une entité autochtone : ils sont Touaregs, Rifains, Kabyles, Chleuhs, Chaouis, Mzabs.

* Imazighen (Amazigh au singulier) – qui signifie homme libre – est le nom originel du terme occidental berbère.

Ferhat Bouda

Né en 1976 en Kabylie, Ferhat Bouda, photographe algérien, membre de l’Agence VU’ depuis 2014, est aujourd’hui basé à Francfort (Allemagne). Il s’inscrit dans une tradition de la photographie documentaire, et témoigne avec respect de situations complexes souvent difficiles à appréhender, déjouant clichés et stéréotypes. Lauréat de la bourse Pierre et Alexandra Boulat en 2016, du prix et de la bourse de la photographie de l’académie des Arts de Berlin en 2020, son travail est régulièrement publié dans la presse internationale, exposé en Algérie, en Allemagne, en France, et présenté lors de festivals.
