New Queens
Thirty-two Queens of France are buried in the Basilica Cathedral of Saint-Denis, France. Sandra Reinflet photographed the stained-glass windows depicting them and then projected these images onto the bodies of women from Saint-Denis who, through their strength and determination, are queens in their own way.
These new sovereigns, whom I met during workshops in the associations they attend, have had complex lives. Yet today, they are developing projects, leading their families and communities, and standing tall when everything conspires to make them bow their heads. This work pays tribute to them, as well as to all those who, like them, deserve to be more often recognized. It has been exhibited at the Place de la Bastille in Paris as part of the Photoclimat Biennale, in the crypt of the Basilica where the historical queens are buried, and at the Cité du Vitrail in Troyes.

Sandra Reinflet uses photography and text to stage reality. She was awarded the BNF’s Great Photographic Commission with her series Bure, the Prize of Silence. Her work Voice.X, Artists Under Constraint received the SCAM’s Roger Pic Prize. Who Killed Jacques Prévert? was recognized with theTalent Reportage Grant. Sandra Reinflet has also published five books and carries out numerous cultural projects to amplify the voices of those who are not heard, or not heard enough.
