Kherson : Living to resist
The capture of Kherson in southern Ukraine by Russian forces in the spring of 2022 was immediately followed by the imposition of massive propaganda aimed at presenting the city as “liberated.” However, during the nine months of occupation, residents developed several forms of resistance, despite repressed demonstrations, arrests, torture, and the abduction of hundreds of children.
After the city was recaptured by the Ukrainian army in the autumn of 2022, the euphoria was short-lived. Kherson is under constant fire from Russian strikes posted five kilometers away. The destruction of the Kakhovka Dam in June 2023 further aggravated the situation with massive flooding. The city has lost a large part of its population. Those who remain endure random Russian drone strikes. Despite this deluge of attacks, Kherson residents maintain a semblance of normalcy by restoring underground spaces dedicated to social and educational life. Their determination is a testament to an implacable resistance against Russian attempts to destroy them.
Virginie Nguyen Hoang
Belgian Virginie Nguyen Hoang first studied journalism. In 2012, she joined the Hans Lucas agency, co-founded the HUMA collective, and moved to Egypt before working around the world. Her photographs tell stories, particularly those concerning social exclusion and the impact of conflict on populations. Virginie collaborates with many international publications and has received several prestigious awards. She is now based in Kyiv, Ukraine.
