Olivier Laban-Mattei – Black Snow

BLACK SNOW
Greenland, independence at what price?

Under the Danish Crown for three hundred years, the Greenlanders are only one referendum away from becoming masters of their destiny. But the road to independence is strewn with pitfalls. Ballot papers will certainly not be enough to erase the painful traces of a colonization that no longer speaks its name, nor to correct the failings of political decision-makers who too often abandon their children to idleness. If the Inuit of Greenland have never stopped learning from their environment and adapting – willingly or by force – to the movements of their time, they must now find their place in the cacophonous concert of nations and multinationals who compete in ingenuity to covet the riches of their land. At the heart of the military, energy and climate challenges of tomorrow, the northern island of barely 56,000 souls is seeking to invent its own future by trying to avoid new dependencies with uncertain consequences.

Olivier Laban-Mattei

After ten years spent at Agence France-Presse covering French and international news, Olivier Laban-Mattei embraced independence in 2010 and embarked on long-term documentary projects exploring the question of the destructuring of societies, whether due to war, global warming or new forms of colonialism. He has been a member of the MYOP agency since 2013.
